Instagram shows the same photo at different shapes depending on where it appears. Here are the sizes that matter, and how to make every version from one photo in a few seconds.
| Where | Size (px) | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Portrait post (most room in the feed) | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Portrait post, as the profile grid shows it | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 |
| Story and Reel | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 |
| Profile picture | 320 × 320 (shown as a circle) | 1:1 |
For the feed, portrait 4:5 takes up the most space on screen, so it's usually the best choice. The profile grid now shows posts as 3:4 tiles, so keep faces and text away from the top and bottom edges of a 4:5 image, or post at 3:4.
Stories and Reels fill the screen at 9:16. Instagram covers the top and bottom with its own buttons, so leave about 250 px clear at the top and bottom for text and logos.
It all happens in your browser, so your photos are never uploaded.
